Modders of Baldur's Gate 3 are already using the jailbroken level editor in order to create the first custom maps for the game, including a Hell proof-of concept level.
Modder Siegfre took just two days to crack open Baldur’s Gate 3’s official mod tools. He unlocked a level editor, which allowed fans to create their own custom modules and even campaigns. After a week, the modders have already begun to see results, sharing videos and images of playable custom level.
S, a YouTube channel, has created some of the most impressive work I've ever seen. The standout is a work-in-progress take on Avernus. This is the top layer of Forgotten Realms Nine Hells, and an important part of Baldur’s Gate 3’s backstory. We can also see it in-game in the Nautiloid Tutorial and House of Hope Endgame Dungeon. S appears to have used assets from both the Shadow Cursed Lands and the Avernus parts in the final game to create the area. It is similar to Caelid, from Elden Ring.
The Avernus Mockup is especially exciting because, despite being created from stock assets, it looks very distinct from the areas of the base game. We've also got environmental storytelling skeletons in this mockup, which is how you can tell it's real. S has a prototype of a level that consists of a lighthouse perched on a rocky outcrop. Its in-editor working title suggests it was intended to be a location from Underdark, but the skybox has not been implemented yet.
Lotrich is another modder who has created a small wilderness area which resembles the party camp from the base game. Crucible Gaming has tutorials on creating new maps as well as those for implementing scripting and dialogue. According to S' video descriptions some of these modders have organized a Discord server for collaboration and sharing findings related to level editor.
Crucible Gaming shows how to export a map from the editor into Baldur's Gate 3 itself. These are proof-of concept works and I haven't seen any that can be downloaded yet. But this is still an impressive progress considering how little time the level editor has been available. It wasn't meant to be used by the public in the first place. I hope this will lead to a long line of fan-made mods, like those we saw in Skyrim, Half-Life or Neverwinter Nights.
