It's amazing how far Bloodborne emulation technology has advanced in just 2 months.

I want to be clear right away: You can't play Bloodborne on PC without a whole of painful setup. Even if you spend hours to get the game running like I did, it will become apparent very quickly that PS4 emulator still has a long way to come, as evidenced in frequent crashing and lighting glitches. It's amazing that it works, since it's only been two months since developers of the open-source PS4 emulator ShadPS4 began publicly showing off their progress.

You might think that judging by the titles of YouTube videos and the clips you see on Facebook, Bloodborne is now so well emulated on PC that you can enjoy it. There are many videos that aren't deliberately misleading, but also some with descriptions such as this:
"This totally is not for algorithm: We're now running Bloodborne in 60 FPS PC pc bloodborne emulator ps4 bloodborne emulator in 60 FPS high fps crash fix shadps4 hack"

I'm pretty sure that description is , which is for an algorithm. My point is that unless you like to tinker with games more than you enjoy playing them, don't try to emulate Bloodborne yet. This process currently involves more hoops and hulas than a hula-convention:

  • Jailbreaking a PS4
  • Bloodborne: How to rip a copy
  • Dumping PS4 Firmware Files
  • Update Bloodborne to Version 1.09
  • Lance McDonald's 60 FPS patch can be used to patch the updated Bloodborne executable.
  • Install Microsoft Visual Studio if you want to install this patch.
  • Downloading cheats and patches through the emulator to fix the current glitches and bugs in Bloodborne
  • You keep watching it crash and wonder if you should get a new computer, a new build, or a completely different hobby.

You'll need to do some Googling to figure out how to get Bloodborne to run. After two hours of fiddling, I managed to get it working. But the game crashes constantly. This is the most Bloodborne I've played to date:

Aaaaaand crash. I'm going need more time to figure out what arcane rituals people on YouTube have performed in order to hack around these crashes. And the broken lighting.

It's amazing that this is even possible. In July, I spoke to the lead developer for ShadPS4 when Bloodborne was able to boot but couldn't get past the character creation screens. George Moralis, the developer at the time, said that they didn't want users to have high expectations for this game yet because it was still in development. With each new YouTube video, it is harder to control expectations, as the progress has been impressive.

Just look at this:

Here's a video of Moralis showing off the progress made on a recent ShadPS4 build:

I think it will be many months before this type of experience is effortless. It's not possible without patience and the right combination of patches and modifications. But I can't stop being excited by the progression, which is so impressive that I expected to see since I was in July. According to its current trajectory, a Bloodborne emulation that is at least playable could be a great Christmas gift.
