Get 25 Call of Cthulhu books for the TTRPG and a Lovecraftian coloring book for less than $1 each.

The greatest evils never really die, they just wait for their inevitable return. The Humble Bundle's Call of Cthulhu sale from January has returned in time for Halloween. It's a great way to get a library of spine-tingling adventure games for cheap, if you missed it last time.

Call of Cthulhu has been around since 1981, making it one of the oldest tabletop RPGs. It gives you all the tools to tell stories about brave investigators who get tangled with Lovecraftian terrors that are beyond their comprehension.

This bundle includes all you need to start playing, plus much more. The full collection costs $25 / PS18.76 and includes 26 items. This includes the core book as well as settings such as Pulp and Dark Ages. It also includes more adventures than anyone could ever run and a Lovecraftian coloring book. There are even a few solo adventures included if you want to venture into the darkness alone.

The 11-item bundle, priced at $15/PS11.25, is a great way to get started with the game if you are curious but not sure. The 11 item bundle is less adventurous and contains fewer supplements, but it still contains the core book, a solo quest, and enough content to run multiple campaigns.

The four-item bundle, priced at $5/PS3.75 is less appealing. It's cheap enough that it's a good impulse buy. It includes the starter set, so you can put together a session, but not the core book. You'll be limited in your ability to run a full campaign without it, and I doubt you'd have the tools to run any of the five Doors to Darkness adventures included.

Call of Cthulhu has become dated. It's d100 system works, but is clunky, full of unnecessary details, and lacks the innovative tools found in more modern horror TTRPG games such as Mothership or Alien: The Roleplaying Game. If you asked me what my favorite Lovecraftian game to play is right now, I would recommend the mystery-focused Trail of Cthulhu and super light Cthulhu Dark.

This bundle is still worth recommending. Call of Cthulhu has a wealth of experience and knowledge about how to make a Lovecraftian story work. Even if the core system is not for you, there's still a lot of content you can use with other games. If you're like me, you may enjoy reading about the horrifying monsters that publisher Chaosium has created over the years.

I counted that the bundle is available until November 2. If you're attracted to its dark temptations then grab it before then.
