Oops, I forgot to mention that Concord will be featured in the upcoming TV show Secret Level
It's possible that a TV tie-in will boost a game's popularity. The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, for example, both received a Netflix boost. But it's unlikely that a upcoming TV short set in the world of Concord would have the same impact. The hero shooter is no longer available to purchase. Concord is being taken offline by Sony and Firewalk this week due to a poor player response. It didn't even reach 1,000 concurrents on Steam.
Sony, in a deal that was made before anyone knew about Concord, secured its inclusion into the upcoming Prime Video series Secret Level. The 15 episodes of Secret Level are all inspired by different games. The series will debut in December.
Firewalk has said it will "explore options" to bring Concord back. However, games that have been completely un-launched, like this, often do not return. Concord could join Anthem, Crucible and Artifact in the graveyard.
This might make Secret Level a bit awkward to watch. It was written and conceived with the idea that Concord would still be around or at least popular when it aired. The characters of the sci-fi shooting game were supposed to be its main attraction. Firewalk planned weekly scenes about their space adventures.
Concord's characters and world were not able to capture the imagination of players even before its $40 launch. I think it is safe to say they did not. Their realistically rendered characters have been interpreted by some as being bland compared to the cartoony faces of Overwatch characters. My take is that all of them seem so nice, it's difficult to imagine that they would ever get into a gunfight.
Concord has a few problems. As I wrote last weekend, its competitive hooks - former Destiny 2 developers doing arena and goal modes with an accent on strategic character switching - clearly didn't appeal to any subset of current competitive shooter players. Concord had some good aspects, but it didn't appeal to the Overwatch, Counter-Strike, or Call of Duty crowds.
It might make for good TV. This is the kind of dramatic irony that I've come expect from games. I can already imagine what the response will look like if this episode turns out to a hit: "Why didn’t Sony show us ?"
