Control 2 is not affected by the collapse Annapurna Interactive, because the deal was made by the other Annapurna
Thomas Puha, the studio's director of communications, said that despite the collapse of Annapurna Interactive, whose entire staff quit this week, the recent deal made by Annapurna Pictures with Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment, will remain intact.
Annapurna Pictures and not Annapurna Interactive signed a deal to co-fund Control 2 and gain the rights to adapt Control for film and television. The partnership was announced only a few months ago, and it sparked concerns about its status after the Hollywood Reporter reported that all 25 employees and the senior leadership of the video game publishing division of the company left.
As Remedy's Puha and Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier clarified on X the deal was always linked to Annapurna Pictures and not Annapurna Interactive and hasn't affected. Puha said Remedy was self-publishing Control 2
Annapurna Interactive's games are not likely to be affected by the mass exodus of employees. Several developers confirmed that their games will release as planned, including Ivy Road’s Wanderstop, Great Ape Games’ The Lost Wilds and Matt Newell’s Lushfoil Photography Sim. Newell wrote that Lushfoil Photography Sim would not be affected at this point, as the game is almost complete.
Megan Ellison, Annapurna's owner and founder, said in a Bloomberg statement that "our top priority is to continue to support our developers and publishing partners during the transition." The publisher, founded in 2016, gained popularity after publishing popular games such as Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch. The publisher has announced over 10 games for release in this year and beyond.
Nathan Gary, the president and cofounder of Annapurna Interactive, left with the rest the executive team after negotiations with Ellison failed to turn the games division into its own company. Gary has been replaced with another co-founder Hector Sanchez who took over the role last month, after returning from Epic Games.
The future of Annapurna Interactive remains uncertain. If Annapurna Interactive is to provide the publishing assistance it has promised its partners, they will have to hire a new staff. This could be disruptive for developers who may have worked with the old staff for years. I hope that things go well but it may take some time for the effects to fully manifest.
