Deus Ex's Halloween update, thanks to its all-encompassing Randomizer Mod, has game modes and mods that turn it into a Survival Horror game
The Deus Ex Randomizer, an extensive mod for customizing playthroughs of the classic immersive sim, has just delivered something I'd never thought I'd see: A seasonal update for Ion Storm's twisty cyberpunk noir, complete with Halloween-appropriate level decorations and new, survival horror-themed modes.
The Deus Ex Randomizer is a powerful tool that allows you to customize your playthroughs. It supports multiple mods, and offers a wide range of options for tweaking. You can decide how random the maps will be in a playthrough, including enemies, NPCs and objectives, passwords and even the start/exit point. The "WaltonWare mode" is the most extreme, breaking the game into small chunks to be played quickly. You are dropped into random maps with a set of objectives that is more Jackass-like than immsim.
In the spirit Halloween, mod author Die4Ever has added new modes and criteria that are primarily inspired by survival horror video games. You can now activate limited saving like the old Resident Evil ribbons. To do this, you must find "Memory Containment Units", and save your game on computers or public terminals. There's an option that makes dead enemies become zombies after a delay of 20 seconds, and a mechanic where you can take "costumes", or clothing, from downed opponents to wear around.
You'll also find the standardjack o'lanterns and webs, tastefully arranged. My favorite new feature would be "Mr. H," an unkillable Terminator-type character who will follow you through the levels. This is a clear tribute to survival horror staples like Resident Evil Tyrant. All of these options are available in a "Halloween Mode" umbrella or can be used individually with other adjustments.
I'm curious about the new zombies mode. A horde in my Deus Ex game? Welcome to 2024. The new Halloween tweaks seem to work equally well in WaltonWare's quick-hits mode and in a full campaign playthrough. The Randomizer works with many other mods to make Deus Ex the best it can be in the 2020s. You can download the Randomizer from Die4Ever.
