Final Fantasy 14 hunters spent three days collectively losing it trying to spawn monsters with sunglasses, mass cry sessions, and even alpacas... but they only needed to wait
S-Rank monster hunts are hilarious in Final Fantasy 14. Each S-Rank Monster has specific spawn conditions. Some of them are incredibly niche. Want to spawn Armstrong from Endwalker? You can spawn Armstrong by slapping on some gear from a level-46 quest in A Realm Reborn. Then, you'll need to die in a certain spot and hope that he appears. Salt and Light requires that you discard items from your inventory fifty times. This is a tedious process.
It can be difficult to figure out how to get these enemies to appear, especially with other strange spawn conditions, such as using Blue Mage's spell to self-destruct, crafting a steak of high quality, or flying above spawn points while a certain minion is summoned. These riddles are usually solved quickly by groups of hunters. However, one elite enemy from Dawntrail's latest expansion left players stumped for several days.
Kirlirger The Abhorrent is one of the new S-Rank hunts that was added to the game in the 7.05 patch released on July 30, 2007. Three days later, on the 2nd of August, he was still not to be found. Hunters' desperate attempts to spawn the elusive ninja were highlighted on twitter. My favourite suggestions included emoting dozing on "landmines" (what hunters refer to as fixed spawn points in each map), putting on sunglasses, or walking about spawn points dressed as a craftsman or gatherer.
How can players get a sense of where to begin? Final Fantasy 14 does not leave you completely in the dark about where to start. Each S-Rank has a description that gives a hint as to its spawn condition. Kirlirger was a big focus of Kirlirgers's description. He avoided a fair fight and preyed on merchants, and could sneak up and attack someone despite being large.
After spending countless hours dressing up as merchants, using eye-related abilities, and killing mobs to try to spawn the monster, it was revealed that all players had to do was wait for a very specific weather condition. Kirlirger The Abhorrent can only be spawned when there is fog during a full moon. This only happens once every 37 hours. It makes sense that people weren't able spawn it quickly, but it was a bit more anti-climactic than people expected.
The process of trying figure out the requirements for a new S-Rank, despite the final spawn conditions being relatively uninteresting is really cool. It's one thing in the game you can't brute force using datamining. It's all about trial and error or waiting for the right weather window.
