Final Fantasy 14 will be remade for mobile by another studio. The jobs and battles have been redesigned to fit your clumsy fingers.
Final Fantasy 14 will be coming to mobile devices (sort of). The critically acclaimed MMORPG, as announced in a charming trailer seen above, will be coming to mobile devices, but in a sundered form. The game was developed by LightSpeed Studios - the same studio that created PUBG Mobile.
According to a post on FF14's website, FF14 Mobile can be thought of as a remake that is separate from the main game. The controls, battles and other aspects will be "optimized for mobile", but a blog post promises that the game's nine jobs, armoury system and 11 crafting and gathering courses, as well as the gold saucer, will all be "optimised".
The trailer also seems to include only A Realm Reborn as part of the story. What form will it take? That remains to be determined. Will it be a trimmed down version with the edges sanded, a reason for returning to the Waking Sands? Or will it be a faithful recreation the one story that veterans are least eager to recommend?
It's strange. I don't have anything against it in theory. Especially since it won't take away dev time from a studio who desperately needs it. But it's weird. It would be the same as if Blizzard released WoW Classic on a mobile device and someone else made a miniature version with completely redesigned class to fit your tiny screen. It's a good idea, but it's strange.
I'm not surprised that Square chose this option, given the opinion of game director Naoki "Yoshi P" Yoshida on a classic version before A Realm Reborn--a question to which he famously replied in crisp, clear English using the word "NIGHTMARE", even before his translator had a chance to interject. Even if he would likely be more receptive to an ARR timeline.
Even though I'm glued to my tower, mobile gaming is huge. There's a good reason why a lot of my colleagues have Steam Deck or why HoYoverse makes money with its trio of mobile-ready Gacha goldmines. I have no doubt that FF14 Mobile will make a billion dollars if it is even remotely good. Just like the MMO on which it's based. The game will be "available to demo through multiple tests in China followed by a launch globally soon after". You can register right now.
