The Moo Deng frenzy is officially in Final Fantasy 14. It seems to have caused the price of its adorable hippo minon to skyrocket.

We can't seem to get through a single day at PC Gamer without someone mentioning Moo Deng. The adorable pygmy hippo has taken the internet by storm. Final Fantasy 14 players seem to be no different.

According to GamesRadar's report, the price of the MMO minions, Hippo Calfs, has risen dramatically in recent weeks. It's a randomly dropped item from Vanaspati, which is a level 84 Dungeon in the Endwalker Expansion. Twitter user Cerulean shared two screenshots comparing prices of the minion in Japanese server Tonberry. One was taken right when Moo Deng became popular, and the other from last week, when people were hippo-crazy.

The price went from a respectable 10,001 to 30,000 Gil--which is an incredibly decent price for a random minion that drops from a recent dungeon. It then climbed to 100,000 Gil before it was listed at just under 300,000 Gil in more recent listings.

I checked my server and was surprised that there wasn't a single Hippo Calf for sale. However, price history showed that players were paying over 100,000 gil per Hippo Calf to add it to their list of minions. I tried to use Universalis, which is a popular tool for tracking prices of items across servers. However, it only tracks the last seven days of data.

Prices have dropped as low as 45,000 gil in the last week on Europe's servers. One (I assume) Moo Deng enthusiast paid nearly 340,000 gil for one. I was also interested to see the prices of the other Endwalker dungeon minion. The Wind-up Magus Sisters have been selling for anywhere between 28,000 gil and 70,000 gil this last week. Meanwhile, the Wind-up Anima is comfortably priced in the 90,000.130,000 gil range.

Cerulean screenshots seem to match Moo Deng’s rise to fame perfectly. Square Enix is to blame for the Great Hippo Calf Inflation in 2024. Square Enix capitalized on Moo Deng’s fame by posting a short video on Twitter of the minion yawning while being splashed.

The quote tweets were intended to draw comparisons between both. Square Enix is to blame for this, and I believe you should offer everyone a Hippo Calf as a way of saying sorry. You could at least make the drop RNG more favorable to me so I don't have to run Vanaspati a hundred times just to get him.
