The missing English voice acting in Genshin Impact has returned in its latest trailer. However, players are not sure if it's time to celebrate.
The latest trailer for Genshin Impact has something that the previous ones lacked: English voice acting. Fans are wondering if the new characters Chasca & Ororon in version 5.2 is a sign of voice acting being restored with this update.
Genshin Impact's characters went silent shortly after the SAG/AFTRA voice actors strike began in July. Some of the cutscenes in its latest 5.1 update are oddly silent, and some trailers have either no dialogue or are in Japanese. Hoyoverse's voice actors may have changed recently.
Genshin Impact is included in the rules that allow voice actors to continue working on games that were produced before August 25. Some of its characters, however, are voiced by actors working under Formosa Interactive. This is one of the ten companies that SAG-AFTRA has targeted in its strike to clarify its use of generative AI as well as negotiate compensation for material generated based on a voice or likeness of an actor. Riot Games uses the exact same production company to create League of Legends characters.
In the patch notes of the previous update, Hoyoverse stated that the lack of English voice was "due recording arrangements" and left it at this. Since then, the studio has not commented on the strike and the status of the contract it holds with Formosa Interactive. It's been rumored that the studio has started working with a company that is not affected by the strike. However, it hasn't confirmed this.
Gabriel Castro, the voice of three characters, responded to a fan who predicted the return of English voices under the trailer posted today, suggesting that nothing had changed:
"I know that you guys want English VA, but it's entirely up to Hoyoverse!" We voice actors should be treated with respect, and we need to know that they won't dabble in AI. It's important, but I do hope we can all come back soon to voice for the game!
It's possible that the voices were recorded some time ago or these specific voice actors have a different company. Corina Boettger is the voice of floating sidekick Paimon. She works for a separate studio. This is why her character was not affected.
We'll have to wait until version 5.2 is released on November 20 to find out what will happen. Along with two new characters, the update will also bring new bosses and zones, as well as another chapter in the current Archon storyline.
