Indiana Jones and the Great Circle features 15 minutes of destroying Nazis and stealing treasures.
MachineGames has released a "deep dive," look at what is in store for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. If I were to indulge in my inner pedant, I would say that the video is more about breadth than it is depth.
I say this because the video covers everything Indy will have to offer in his latest outing. From basic gameplay mechanics - stealth, fisticuffs and occasional gunfire - to puzzles, exploration and exotic locales as well as the supporting cast that will help our intrepid explorer on his adventures.
I'll be blunt: This is all so familiar that it's actually a bit boring. It's all so conventional to throw a bottle at a guard, to scooch along the edge of a mountain, to find clues in conveniently located notes, to jump between platforms, to insert X into Z to open a lock. It's important to see how these elements work together, and it is fair to say that familiarity plays a large part in why the series is so popular. Indiana Jones is not BJ Blazkowicz.
MachineGames seems to have nailed it on this front: This looks and sounds exactly like an Indiana Jones adventure. In a recent hands-on review, senior editor Robin Valentine said that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle did a "fantastic job" recreating the look and sound of the movies. "Environments were remarkably lavish and clearly painstakingly research--some replicating specific places from the movies, such as Marshall College; others real historical sites. Jones looks like he stepped out of a movie, and Troy Baker's impression is often startlingly accurate.
The gameplay is less certain. "In one scene, I was genuinely moved by a scene where Jones gave an emotional gift to an old friend. After ten minutes, I found that I could sprint for a little longer if I made Jones steal lemons from Nazis and eat the whole lemons to boost his stamina.
Well, it is a videogame--concessions must be made. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on December 8, so we'll see what happens. Pre-orders are available on Steam.
