Konami has revealed the identity of Eva, who acted with Naked Snake in MGS3, 20 years after it was released.
Metal Gear Solid is about mystery. Who are the Patriots? What happened to the Philosophers' legacy? What was the real story behind the Boss's involvement in World War 2? What was that noise you heard? Whose footprints?
Kojima may have created some clever riddles, but none of them can compare to the greatest mystery of all: who is Suzetta Mint, the actor who was credited with playing MGS3 Eva in 2004, a motorcycling Bond Girl with serial numbers removed? Since years, players have been trying hard to solve the mystery. But Konami, Kojima and Eva's actress have kept it a secret. Until today. At the time of writing this, it was less than an hour.
David Hayter, the voice actor of Eva, was finally revealed by Konami in the third part to their ongoing Metal Gear Solid Legacy Series (released to generate excitement for MGS Delta). It turns out that Jodi Benson was the voice actress who played Ariel (in The Little Mermaid), Barbie (in Toy Story) and Thumbelina in Thumbelina.
It's not a big surprise. The thing about Eva, is that she sounds uncannily similar to Ariel from The Little Mermaid. Fans have long speculated--almost to the point where it has become canon-like--that Benson was Eva all along. Benson explained why we had never received a proper confirmation.
Benson explained that the projects she is involved with are based on children and families. "It was Kris Zimmerman Salter, our [voice] director. She sat me down and said 'Maybe you need to change your names'."
Eva is not a character that is based on children or families. She is a femme fatale who spends most of the game with a chest out, for no reason other than Kojima just being Kojima. Kojima murders many people and she suffers under the control of Colonel Volgin, the main villain of the game. Benson's Disney-heavy work would not be suited to her.
"So [Salter] ask me, 'What was the name of your dog when it was a puppy?'" Benson explained that her dog was called "Suzette Monet," a name that is remarkably upmarket. Salter took that idea and worked with it: "How about instead we do Minet?" Benson said, "I was like 'Sounds good'."
Jodi became Suzetta minet, even though her true identity was kept a secret. Benson tells Hayter and The Boss actress Lori Alan the story of a fan who came up to her seven years ago with a signed copy of the game. "Do you know what my deep dark secret is?" Benson told the anonymous fan to "Shh!" Keep it quiet!"
This isn't the only revelation in the 14-minute show. Lori Alan never saw her work in "Until recently", which is quite amazing considering that she plays the Boss, a character so important to the series. Benson and Hayter both had never done a love scene in voice acting before. When it was time to record Snake getting hot and heavy with Eva, it turned out that Hayter and Benson were sitting in a studio kissing their hands passionately. Voice acting must be a strange job.
