Once Human dev: Recent player feedback has been 'demoralizing'

Once Human is a free-to-play survival MMORPG that we enjoyed. Our review described it as "surprisingly sticky" and "deep." Steam reviews are "mostly positive," and two months after the July launch, there are still over 100,000 daily players. It sounds like it's been a big hit.

Starry Studio says that player feedback hasn't always been positive or fun to read.

"Since Season 2 began, we've received lots of feedback," said the developer on its official Discord channel. "Some of it was quite demoralizing but what's most important is that it made us aware of the impact of our changes on your experience."

According to the post the two main issues that resulted in negative feedback from players during Season 2 are weapon builds and scenario types.

Starry Studio stated that "we understand that the new seasons tags have caused changes to the metagame, affecting weapon and build choices, which have caused some players to believe their previous efforts were wasted." This was not our intention. We plan to add a conversion feature for blueprints to resolve the problem.

The Blueprint Conversions feature allows players to swap the rating from one weapon or armor blueprint for another. The example given in the post is: "The Last Valor (three stars) and Outer Space (one star) can swap blueprint rating to become The Last Valor Blueprint (1 Star) and Outer Space Blueprint (2 Stars). This change will allow players to continue using the builds that they prefer for the new season. It's similar to transmogrification in an RPG, where you can apply properties from one set of armor onto another.

Second, we've seen this issue in multiplayer survival games from time to time: some players prefer a punishing, grueling experience, while others don't. This sounds like the situation with Once Human's scenario:

Starry Studio said that some players complained about tags being poorly designed, while others complained about having too few scenario server with difficult tags. The players had varying opinions about the number of servers and the rate at which they should open.

Starry Studio wants to resolve this issue by asking for more feedback. This is done via a short survey where players can give their opinions on the gameplay mode (PvE orPvP), the difficulty level they want (easier or harder or Goldilocks style, in between), and what scenario types they like.

I searched for some of the "demoralizing feedback" to see what players had to say, but I haven't found many complaints about weapon builds andthe scenarios in Season 2. This could be because the feedback section on the official Discord channel sends messages directly to developers, rather than making them public. The most recent negative Steam reviews mention that Once Human's server are wiped regularly, similar to the way things work in Rust. I can understand's complaint, and that's why I won't play Rust either: I understand why servers must be wiped regularly, but I don't want my base and equipment to get reset every month.

Once Human is a game that's gaining momentum as one of the most anticipated games of 2024, despite some negative feedback. There are a couple of clown emojis on Discord in response to the developer's announcement, but there are more than twice as much heart emojis. That's a good sign in my book.
