Overwatch 2 Season 13 will introduce map changes. This means that one of worst maps ever could finally be fun to enjoy.
Overwatch 2 Season 13 will begin in a few short days. There is a lot of new content to learn and understand before the season begins. Blizzard teased us with a new character and showed us some of the upcoming skins for the battle pass and shop. But what really excites me is all the changes to maps.
The Season 13 trailer provided a very brief (but first) look at the changes to the maps for Circuit Royal, Dorado and Havana. It may not seem like there are any differences between the old and new versions at first. After looking at Blizzard’s press center, I've realized that there is a lot more to offer than I initially thought.
Circuit Royal has five changes (although some are not major). There is now a small structure just outside the spawn gates. This is probably to provide some cover for the attacking team. At the third and last point, the outside high ground has been changed to provide more space. There's also a new door next to the second spawn point of the defending team.
The most interesting change to this map is the fact that the attacking team has more cover on the incline beyond the first point. It's notoriously difficult to push a cart up the hill, as the defence has high ground and there is little cover for the little old support characters to hide behind during an attack.
Dorado will also see similar changes. More cover is added around the fountain in the first point. It's also added to the balcony in the second point. And it's also added to the corridor upstairs at the third point. While this will be great for DPS and long-range support heroes, the best change is probably the new access to high ground around the map.
The balcony outside the first point now has a giant stairway leading up to it, and the rooftop outside the attack's spawn now has a lift. This will change the team composition in Dorado. Before, both the attacking and defending team would pick heroes who could easily scale buildings. These new lifts and stairs mean that an enemy Zarya who is unable to juke or leap can now get in your face, even if you are sheltering on a balcony.
Havana is also adding more stairs to its third point and changing the staircase next to the second. Havana now has more high ground at its first point (not that Widowmaker needed an extra spot), new doors for the defenders' first spawn room and more ground outside of the attackers' third spawn.
Then there is Numbani. After all the 2CP maps have been thrown out, I realized how much I dislike Numbani. The first point is easy to defend, but the second is difficult to attack because of the high ground around it, the choke points where the defending team could trap you, and the long trek that attacking heroes have to make to flank.
If I ever get to the bowl (also known as the first level), I'm usually left staring up at a barrage like Willem Defoe did in the scene from At Eternity’s Gate. I was happy to see that it would be updated.
The map hasn't been changed as much as I would like, but the changes we have made will make it easier to attack the first point. The main changes are the addition of a new staircase at the first and second point, which will make it easier for an attacking team to reach high ground. There's also more cover on the map.
Overwatch 2 Season 13 map changes are better called the staircase update. This is the main component and will make the biggest difference in the game. This doesn't fix every issue with every map but it's a good start and an indication that Overwatch 2 is still playing with structural changes.
