Overwatch 2’s new tank hero, Hazard, will be playable only for a limited time this Friday. So far, he looks like a treat for brawlers
Hazard, the new tank hero in Overwatch 2, who was teased by the Season 13 trailer, will be available for all players to play on Friday only. He will then be permanently added in Season 14, just 21 days away. The only thing we have is a short trailer for the new tank hero Hazard. But if you look between the lines, it contains a lot of information.
In the trailer we see Hazard and a small team break into Moira O’Deorain’s lab at Oasis university. Moira, who is a supporting character, is a genetic engineer who experiments with genetic engineering to rewrite life's basic building blocks. This lab is where she works on repairing degenerative gene structures. She also investigates a mysterious black ball in the middle of Oasis' spawn point.
The interior of this spawn point was changed after the Season 13 trailer, which revealed the first hint at a new tank character. The research room was smeared with neon paint that read "Phreaks", which we now know is Hazard's group. Bullet holes were also scattered on the walls. The mysterious orb of black goo was also missing.
I believe that Hazard and his group of Phreaks could be former test-subjects of Moira who are now working hard to bring her down. Moira is known to have experimented with humans in the past. She gave Reaper superhuman regenerative powers and other powers after saving his life. She is also known as an amoral researcher who only cares about her research. I wouldn't have been surprised if Moira kept some human guinea-pigs. Even if Moira's research didn't directly affect the Phreaks, it is clear that they are interested in her research.
Hazard, along with his team, breaks in to collect Moira's goop orb experiment into a test-tube. Hazard decides that he will use this unknown substance for good after armed guards surround him. He injects himself with the entire amount. This sends him on a frenzy and he takes down every guard who gets in his path.
Hazard's in-game abilities will probably be reflected in some of the attacks he uses in the trailer. The unknown substance appears to manifest as pink crystals which emerge from Hazard's rear. These can be shot in the air to rain down on players, or shot out of Hazard's gun to create massive crystals.
Hazard, like other brawling tanks with shotguns, has a shotgun in one of his arms. This will make him more effective at close-up combat. The other arm has a huge pink energy claw, which is likely to be used in the same way as Junker Queen's Carnage, where she can swing her massive axe at nearby enemies.
Overwatch 2 has added a lot of new heroes that are different from the old guard. The 5v5 format is a major factor in turning team fights into brawls. By that I mean players fight on top of each other, whether it's on an objective or a payload. Now, a tank with a lot of health and lethal close-up is a necessity.
All the tanks that were added to Overwatch 2 --Junker Queen Ramattra and Mauga -- are at their best when fighting close-up. It's important to have a strong fighter in the middle of your team, especially since there is no longer a second tank that can be used to do extra DPS poke damage like D.Va and Winston used to. Hazard looks to be a good fit for that position.
