Silent Hill 2 players can remove the fog from the game and use the camera to see hidden details in the remake.

Silent Hill's fog is credited to a hardware limitation. The short draw distance of the original PlayStation combined with a love of Stephen King's The Mist led to a city covered in clouds that obscured distant details. This not only masked any limitations, but also allowed you to hear monsters before they appeared. The designers leaned into this, adding a static-filled radio to indicate when the monsters were near. This formula was carried over in multiple sequels.

Modders have already started their work now that the Silent Hill 2 remake has been released on PC. Nexus Mods has more than 50 mods and more are being added every day. Two of them remove the fog, including Silent Hill 2 HD Collection and Sunny Hills. The latter is a cheeky nod to the reduced effects in the disappointing HD remake from 2012. While both are tongue-in-cheek--removing a defining feature of the series for the sake of some funny screenshots--it's fascinating to see what Bloober's version of the town looks like without limits.

Nebula480 uploaded a gallery of fogless screen images to the Silent Hill Subreddit. These streets still retain their mystique, even if you can see blocks away. The rundown facades and the bitumen covered in rain are still creepy.

Simple FreeCam is another mod that can really enhance your photos. Alt+F1 enables a Flycam. Other commands let you disable the UI and pause time. You can also teleport James directly to the camera. There's a good reason why the camera never lets you see the back seat. As multiple players have confirmed: if you change the view, you can see the floral blanket covering what is clearly meant to be a body on the backseat. Bloober, you're a genius.
