Silent Hill 2 remake patches improve performance, but unfortunately stop James from teleporting and falling through peepholes.

What is your favorite part of Silent Hill 2? James Sunderland has a lot of superpowers. Teleportation, phasing walls, psychosexual desire, all those abilities he gained after being bitten by the radioactive widower. The first two are what make him a powerful horror game protagonist, but they were removed from the game's latest patch.

Patch 1.04 was released today and contains a number of fixes to Silent Hill 2 bugs and performance issues. I'll paste all the fixes below, which, for the record, is more work than it sounds. Please read them carefully.

James can't jaunt through the peepholes anymore like a low budget Gully Foyle. Before SH2, a bug would teleport James to Brookhaven Hospital if he looked at the wrong side of the peephole. Now he can peek all he wants.

Also, he won't get stuck on the frame of the window at Neely's or fall through the earth when approaching Laura in the hospital. If you only knew about Silent Hill 2 from these patch notes, you might think James Sunderland is some sort of absent-minded magician.

Bloober also says that it has fixed some of those visual glitches for users of Nvidia DLSS. Bloober claims to have fixed some of the visual glitches that were happening for people using Nvidia DLSS.

The studio also says that the game runs better on Steam Deck. This is more relevant to me. I had loaded up the game on my Deck a few weeks ago before a trip and was disappointed to discover that it was virtually unplayable. If the game runs on my portable powerhouse I'll be happy.

The Silent Hill 2 remake was a hit here. Kerry Brunskill gave it a 78% rating in our Silent Hill 2 Review and said that "when it is good, it is excellent." Even Bloober skeptics have praised the studio's efforts.

Technical

  • NVIDIA DLSS version newest has reduced visual glitches.
  • Added a menu option to enable DLSS frames generation when using DLSS supersampling.
  • NVIDIA Reflex now activates when DLSS frame creation is enabled.
  • Support for AMD FSR version 3.1.1 has been added.
  • When using FSR 3.1, there is now an option in the menu to enable AMD Fluid Movement Frames.
  • Updated Intel Nanites for upcoming driver updates.

Gameplay

  • Fixes an issue where the translation for UI High preset was not translated and displayed correctly
  • Wooden Plank no longer appears during James' death animation
  • Fixes a streaming issue that caused the environment to load incorrectly when James was staring at the walls of the Grand Market.
  • James was teleported to the wrong side when interacting with the peephole at Brookhaven Hospital.
  • James got stuck in the frame of the window when breaking windows near Neely’s Bar
  • James was able to access the balcony that was inaccessible in Blue Creek Apartments after a fix.
  • Fixed an issue where Abstract Daddy was not hitting James properly during the boss fight.
  • Abstract Daddy's third TV should now have the correct sound and the wall will no longer interfere with its location.
  • Fix for the issue where a question mark in the Conference Room did not disappear after obtaining Cinderella figurine at Lakeview Hotel
  • Fixes a problem with collision detection in the Dayroom walls at Brookhaven Hospital
  • James was unable to see Laura when she entered Brookhaven Hospital through the bushes on the right.
  • Blue Creek Apartments Clock Room: Removed debug numbers behind wallpapers
  • James was unable to leave the 3F corridor at the Lakeview Hotel.
  • Fix for the issue of the lightbulb in the 3rd Floor Blue Creek Apartments that was constantly on and impervious to destruction.
  • Woodside Apartments: Resolved a problem with a small coffee table that was blocking James in the corner.
  • After completing the Disgust path in Labyrinth the player was forced into doing it all again.
  • Fix for Spider Mannequins sticking to James when he is doing squeeze traversal
  • James no longer gets stuck in the frame of the window when attacking the Lying Figures outside the window
  • James now moves more naturally when changing weapons and aiming
  • Multiple Spider Mannequin events were triggered on the Fear Path in Labyrinth. This issue has been fixed.
  • The ability to pick up items is improved during the final boss battle
  • The Moth Room has been updated to fix the issue of picture frames overlapping.
  • Improved deformation of Nurses skirts
  • The information about unlocking NewGame+ did not appear in the language selected by the player.
  • Fixing the visible unloading of a garage door in the West side of South Vale
  • Fix question mark on the map in Woodside Apartments during Chute Puzzle
