Silent Hill's original art director lost his love life because he had no time to date.
Masahiro ito is a legendary artist. He worked as an art director on Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3. He designed monsters for some of the most visually stunning horror games ever. But success has a cost.
During a Q&A session, Ito talked about his hectic schedule when he was in college, when he majored in graphic design and studied oil painting as a side hobby, while also learning 3D modeling, animation, and developing the first Silent Hill. Ito says, "However I could [model]/build the Silent Hill 2 creatures and animations." "I also built all of the cutscenes of Pyramid Head by myself. Practice makes perfect."
There are some downsides to all this work. While it is clear that Ito has a lot of fans, there are also some cons. Ito says, "As an aside, during the time I attended my art university, or developed Silent Hill 1,2,3, and a cancelled game, I never had girlfriends." "Coz I had no time for it. I never thought of myself as a genius but I was very competitive. "The only way to beat geniuses, is to completely give yourself to what you want to accomplish."
Ito responded to a player who praised Ito's "rags-to-riches story" by saying, "I am not rich." I am not the owner of Pyramid Head, Bubble Head Nurse or any other copyright. Ito then replies, "I don't have a family, but thank you so much!" when someone tries to console him with the fact that his family is probably proud of him.
Ito doesn't seem to regret his story. Ito did seem to have made some sacrifices. But to do it for the sake defining early-generation games is pretty legendary, and I, for one am very grateful for.
