Microsoft has blocked Windows 11 updates on PCs that have Star Wars Outlaws or other Ubisoft Games installed
Microsoft has now blocked Windows 11's 24-H2 update for machines that have installed a number of recent Ubisoft titles. This was first reported by Bleeping Computer. Some users have reported that the games they are trying to play crash repeatedly, sometimes even on startup.
After installing Windows 11, version 24,H2, you may encounter issues with certain Ubisoft Games. Microsoft wrote about the known issues with 24H2 in a help page. "These games may become unresponsive when starting, loading, or during active gameplay." To protect your Windows update experience we have placed a compatibility lock on devices that have these games installed. These devices will no longer be offered Windows 11, version 24H2 through the Windows Update release channel." If you already have 24H2 installed, and don't wish to wait for the fix in order to play these games right now, you should probably roll back to version 23H2 until a fix is available.
24H2 was released in phases at the beginning October. Bleeping Computer found a number of posts on Reddit, as well as the Microsoft Answers forums, describing issues with the game since the rollout. The reports that date back to the Windows Insider preview version of 24H2 are even more frustrating. Rachidramone, a Windows Insiders subreddit user, described the problem exactly as it is now and with Ubisoft's games from July. Microsoft has confirmed that the affected games are:
- Assassin's creed Valhalla
- Assassin's Creed Origins
- Assassin's Creed Odyssey
- Star Wars Outlaws
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
It seems that other Ubisoft titles have also been affected, as Far Cry and Need for Speed: Unbound were cited by Rachidramone in July. Ubisoft released a hotfix to allow Outlaws run on 24H2, however, we are still waiting for a permanent fix from Microsoft or Ubisoft.
I've never seen anything like this before. I'm curious to know what caused the problem and if it was the fault of Microsoft, Ubisoft or both.
