Starfield's Shattered Space Patch fixes a modding limitation that could turn your video game into a surrealist Hellscape
Starfield's first expansion, Shattered Space, is now available. It brings a new level of cosmic horror with the snake-worshipping space priests we know and love. The update 1.14.70 also includes a number of fixes. We're working on our Shattered Space Review, but in the meantime we have patch notes that you can read. One of them will prevent mods from messing up your game.
The patch is mostly focused on bug fixes and performance improvements. However, it does resolve an important issue that affected players who had made their own additions. Bethesda says that the patch "resolved a problem that limited the number loaded creations to only 255 "--"creations", Bethesda using the term for player-created modifications.
It's not uncommon for a mod to contain multiple plugins. Bethesda’s in-game mod browse allows quick access to thousands Starfield mods. A player can easily walk away after a bout of mod fever, an affliction that we're sure you're familiar with.
Starfield was prone to collapse if you passed the 255 plugin threshold. Quests may not progress. Buildings and walls may not load. The player might not load into the settlement they should be in, but instead into a pit.
They fixed it. No more hellmouths. Mod Starfield as you please (once mod creators have updated their mods).
Another patch note that provides some peace of mind involves a fix for Annihilator weaponry, which can generate a damaging cloud of disease when they strike an enemy. Previously, these clouds did not discriminate between enemies, quest characters, and companions. This meant that they would start taking damage, and reacting as if you had shot them directly. Now, companions won't be so angry that they leave your party because of a single firefight worth of unintentional Annihilator damage.
