Airship Syndicate, which brought Wayfinder back to Steam three months ago, has announced more layoffs. However, they say that future development will continue.

Airship Syndicate, the developer that brought the action RPG Wayfinder to Steam three months ago, has now laid off 16 additional employees. The company says it is "committed" to delivering on the Wayfinder roadmap.

In a joint message on LinkedIn, CEO Joe Madureira, and president Ryan Stefanelli, said: "In light of our industry's difficult challenges, we have had to make the hard decision to let go some incredibly talented Airship Team members, including twelve full-time employees, and four contractors."

"Earlier this year, during a studio restructure, we both took salary cuts that remain in place today. We are also both contributing personal funds in order to continue Airship's operation with the remaining staff.

Wayfinder was initially promising, but it struggled with server issues when it launched in 2023. It ran into more trouble when the original publisher Digital Extremes cut its publishing division just a few months after. This led to the first round of layoffs and pay cuts in January 2024, and in April this year, sales were halted for developers to focus on a major overhaul of the game.

That rework was delivered in June in the Echoes update, a major overhaul that shifted Wayfinder from a free-to-play online game to a conventionally-priced singleplayer game with support for three-player co-op but no online requirements.

In June, the Echoes update was released, and again on September 9, a new update that was equally significant, there were bumps in the player count. The raw numbers were not great. The peak concurrent player count after the Echoes Update was only 1,858. And the spikes did not last, falling back to low triple digits after both updates. Wayfinder is available on the PlayStation Store, so the Steam numbers don't tell the whole story. But they aren’t very encouraging either.

It's not a good sign for a company when executives dip into their own bank account to keep the lights on. But despite the troubles, Madureira said Airship Syndicate would persevere.

They wrote: "Our team of fifty will remain committed to delivering Wayfinder roadmap and developing upcoming projects." "We express our deepest thanks to all of our past and current employees for their hardwork and dedication."

Airship Syndicate announced recently that crossplay will be available on October 21, when Wayfinder is released from early access. Cross-save, cross-progression, and other features will not be supported because Wayfinder saves will no longer be saved online. However, players will still be able join lobbies to play together, regardless of their platform.
