A movie adaptation of Sega's 1993 fighting game Eternal Champions, for some reason is on its way. Get ready to see a caveman battle a cyborg Kickboxer

Eternal Champions was my childhood obsession, while others were more interested in Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat or Tekken. The series didn't last as long, but I'm now vindicated. They're making a movie about Eternal Champions.

You're forgiven if you haven't heard of this Sega Megadrive (or Genesis), classic fighting game. To refresh your memory, it was a game where characters from different eras came together to beat each other up. You could play as a caveman versus a 1920s gangster or a bounty-hunter from the future versus a ninja in the '90s. It was a lot like Mortal Kombat - it had its own version of fatalities for example - but its bizarre roster and fun backgrounds (each stage was a different time frame, naturally) gave the game plenty of personality.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that Derek Connolly was invited to write the script for a movie based on this game. The film will be produced by Skydance Media, in collaboration with Sega. Connolly's background is a bit mixed. He co-wrote Kong Skull Island which I found to be very entertaining, as well as the Jurassic World films, and wrote an early version of the disastrous Rise of Skywalker. Skydance has worked on a variety of projects, including Top Gun: Maverick and The Tomorrow War to Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. My professional opinion is this movie could be good or bad.

It's a strange property to revive at this point. The original game was followed by a sequel in 95, but I don't believe there has been any news from the series for nearly 30 years. You have to wonder how much brand recognition there is, and I'm not sure if there's any nostalgia for it.

It does have an interesting and fun premise. That counts for a lot. All those characters from throughout history are together because a god named the Eternal Champion has plucked them all just before they die. This being gives the characters a second chance to live, a chance to achieve their potential and change the course history.

It's a setup that fits right into the modern movie studio obsession of superhero multiverses. You have characters from different worlds, each with their own quirks and superpowers. There's an alchemist in the 1600s who uses magic, a kickboxer cyborg, a assassin ninja... I could continue. There's an Atlantean Gladiator, Russian acrobats, mutant vampires...

It's possible that this project will never be realized. Even if this project does succeed, videogame films are still not doing well in general, aside from Mario and Sonic. I'm cautiously optimistic in this case. Do I not deserve a movie that caters to my childhood interests exclusively, just like everyone else does? If you want to play the original game, it is available on Steam at a lower price than PS1.
