Acer's latest gaming laptop concept features a pop-out controller that can be split into two like the Switch controller

Acer has just revealed a gaming laptop idea that I hope they follow through with. I don't just think it's absurd, but after my initial shock at seeing it--and against my more cynical side--I can’t help but believe it could be a cool and useful product.

The Acer Project DualPlay concept design is for a gaming computer that has a two in one gamepad on the underside. It also features some pop-out speaker. The basic idea behind the device is to be able to remove the controller and play games when you are ready to relax and then put it back in when you're ready to do more serious computer work.

This laptop is portable. You won't need to bring a gaming controller with you when you travel, as it will be built into your gaming computer.

Acer says that players can easily remove the wireless controller's electromagnetic lock by placing two fingers on its release button located above the keyboard. This action also triggers two high-fidelity 5-watt pop-out speaker to emerge from the side of the laptop. Immerse players in heart-pounding sound that brings every scene alive.

I'm not sure about the pop out speakers. It's a surefire method to turn a practical solution (portability of controllers) into something that looks silly. Buzz Lightyear vibes?

The device is also imagined with tons of RGB lighting. "The device has been wrapped in customizable 360-degree dynamic RGB on the keyboard, screen, and wide trackpad to add to its appeal." The infinity mirror lighting bar on the backside, as well as the joysticks of the detachable controller, add to the mesmerizing display.

The controller is the most important thing. I should really say "controllers", because, like the Nintendo Switch, a controller can be split into two for quick and easy coop gaming.

This device is still in its conceptual stage and may never reach the market. Even when concept hardware is not developed, it can influence future generations of some the coolest and most innovative technology.

I hope that the slide-out control idea will survive even if Project DualPlay doesn't make it to the market. It would be great for those who want to travel with a gaming laptop.

I guess it all depends on how good the actual controller is. A flimsy one could ruin an otherwise cool concept. I wouldn't want it to come at the cost of the laptop's gaming performance. The cynic within me can imagine an overpriced, underperforming RGB laptop with pop-out controller and speakers. This would not be great.

Focus on convenience and practicality, and I'm sold. We can do without the mini Buzz Lightyear speaker wings and just make a laptop with a DualPlay gamepad.
