AMD continues to chip away at Intel, as the latest figures show an increased market share for PCs, laptops, and servers

The bad news just keeps rolling in for Intel. Mercury Research's latest figures show AMD stealing market share from Intel on both desktop and laptop computers. Oh, and servers too. Ouch.

Mercury's figures do show an overall increase for Intel in terms x86 chip share. This is due to the cratering of AMD's SoCs and specifically those in gaming consoles. Mercury does not break down the numbers but Microsoft's Xbox sales have been largely in decline of late. This is where the majority of the pain will come from.

The loss of consoles sales for AMD was inevitable, given the cyclical nature and fact that the current console generation is nearing its end.

AMD's desktop CPU share in 2024 for the second quarter grew from 19.4% to 23%. Intel and AMD are both the only players on the x86 market. Intel's share has dropped from 80.6% down to 77%.

AMD has increased its share of laptops to 20,3% in the latest quarter. This is an increase from 16,5% for the same period last year. AMD also improved its server market share from 18.6% in Q2 2023, to 24.1% in Q2 2024.

Comparing this quarter with Q1 2024, the picture is more mixed. AMD has a slight increase in laptops and servers but a slight decline in desktops. The overall trendlines, however, are quite clear.

Mercury reports that sales of PCs with Arm CPUs have actually fallen. It may seem strange, given the hype surrounding Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X chip. However, sales of Chromebooks have also fallen. Q2 2024 will be too early to see any significant growth in Snap' X laptop volumes.

We'll need to wait until the next few quarters before we can see the impact Qualcomm has on the market, thanks to its being the first company to offer a CPU that is compliant with Microsoft Copilot+ AI.

Intel's overall performance may not be great, but it's important to note that it still has a dominant position when it comes to desktops, laptops, and servers. It holds the vast majority of the market share for all three segments.

Intel's demise is not imminent. It is still the largest player in PC processors.
