Black Mesa's creators reveal their latest project, which has nothing to do Half-Life.
Rogue Point is a new "roguelite tactical cooperative shooter" from Black Mesa creators Crowbar Collective. Narratively, at least, Alexander the Great has died, and a coterie or generals and family dynasties are now fighting to take his power.
Alexander, as portrayed in Rogue Point is actually "the CEO," unnamed richest person in the world. The pretenders to his throne, however, are the "cutthroat corporations" who wage Diadochi Wars using the MERX App, which allows them to "order their private mercenary army as easily as ordering takeout."
In this scenario, you are not one of the "Merx", but rather a "elite independent vigilante team" determined to end corporate wars by declaring a war on the corporations. It's a little counterintuitive, but you have to justify your means if you want peace, or something similar.
As a not-Merx, you'll face off against a variety of enemies in four different locations: the airport, mall and office. Rogue Point has a limited number of environments to run around in, but the roguelite aspect of the game makes up for it: "Each expansive map is reshaped and redesigned by the Parametric Design System of the game, offering new challenges and strategies with each play," states the Steam page. "The constantly evolving gameplay makes every mission feel as thrilling and unique, keeping the excitement alive throughout every campaign."
Rogue Point has a strong Rainbow Six element, with each mission starting with a planning and loading stage. It's "purpose-built" to encourage teamplay, rather than four guys running around blasting everything that moves. We will have to see how this works in practice. Players will unlock weapons and cosmetics as well as campaign modifiers to create unique loadouts. This will lead to the "ultra-hard Endgame Mission" which, I imagine, will have a better name when Rogue Point launches.
Rogue Point, unlike Rainbow Six - or Rainbow Six Siege - will not support PvP. Crowbar Collective stated that the core of the game was PVE, and this is where they wanted to focus. "We will be keeping an eye on the community feedback, but this type of experience is already available elsewhere," Crowbar Collective said.
Adam Engels, CEO and Project Leader, said: "We are excited to talk about the game and all we learned from creating a brand new IP and turning Crowbar Collective in a full-time development studio." "Like Black Mesa, our goal is to heavily involve the community in development and updates. Our community was crucial in the Early Access for Black Mesa, and having [publisher] Team 17 on board as a partner helps us focus development and community feedback.
Rogue Point's release date has not been announced, but it is expected to arrive in 2025 in early access. Crowbar Collective has not revealed the price, but the game will be a free-to-play title.
