Blizzard has released the 2.0 update to try and make up for the failure of Warcraft 3 Reforged, which was released nearly 5 years ago.
In 2020, I rated Warcraft 3 Reforged as "a fantastic RTS let down a disappointing remaster," before giving it a score of 59%. The majority of the 59% score was due to Warcraft 3's original radness. After nearly two decades of waiting for a sequel we only got a bad remaster.
I wrote: "There's a classic RTS with its elaborate faction designs, memorable campaigns, and clever RPG features, and then there is the 'Reforged" part." "It is an attempt to bring this game into the modern era, but it feels half-hearted. This is not the remaster Warcraft 3 deserves.
Blizzard implemented a "refunds on request" policy for Warcraft 3 Reforged. Since then, Blizzard has continued to provide support, and nearly five years later, they are still trying to make amends.
Warcraft 3 Reforged 2.0 is now available. Brad Chan, senior manager of Warcraft RTS, says that he has adhered to a few principles throughout his career. "When something breaks, you fix. When something is wrong you fix it. "If things aren't right, you fix them.
So! What is 2.0? It's quite a lot, in fact. Here are some highlights:
- Renovated environments
- Overhauled lighting
- Revamped user interface
- Warcraft 3 Classic assets have been upgraded to HD
- Mix and match Classic HD and Reforced assets
- In-game hotkey customisation
- Revamped ladder
But I'm not certain if anything will get me to return to Warcraft 3 Reforged. It's almost been five years. I've moved forward. I'm hardly disappointed anymore. Blizzard is clearly still trading on its impressive history with the addition of Warcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 remasters. But what I really want to see is that it actually invests in a new RTS. Warcraft 4 is the game I want. StarCraft 3 will do. Not nostalgia, but something new and innovative that builds on past experiences. What are the chances of that happening? Real slim.
