Blizzard was caught by a mischevious dagger that slipped Diablo 4 players free boosts to XP under the table.

Diablo 4 players reported receiving the biggest XP boost in their lives during the latest season. One player went instantly from level 60 to level 100, a task that normally takes several hours of grinding dungeons. Blizzard investigated and found the culprit. A new, unique dagger designed for rogues.

Blizzard, however, has disabled the dagger's unique effect while it works to fix the problem.

Adam Fletcher, head of PR at X, wrote: "We have temporarily disabled The Umbracrux's unique power." This is due to reports of massive experience gained by players during specific encounters.

The Umbracrux, a new item for season 5, is only available to rogues. It creates a totem that spreads all the damage you do to it to nearby enemies. This clever effect is crucial for some of the most powerful rogue builds in this season. It's like a butter knife without it.

Nobody knows why the dagger spits out XP to some players. Reddit user Neamins uploaded a video in which they shot up 34 level after killing a boss of a stronghold with it equipped. Many other players experienced the same thing in the Infernal Hordes wave dungeons. My guess is that it must have some weird interaction with the way Diablo 4 scales its monsters according to your level during its scripted battle encounters, which is causing players to get buckets of XP after it disappears.

No affected players had their free levels revoked or received any sort of erroneous suspension. Blizzard decided to give them their free character boost, just like they did for all those players who received uber uniques as a result of a bug around the launch of the game.

Diablo 4's season has been a great one. Even if rogue players have to use a backup dagger a few days, it is a small blemish. Blizzard has reworked every unique item and each class is flourishing. Diablo 4 is in a great position as it transitions to its first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, in October.
