Civilization 7 system requirements have been released and they are surprisingly easy to meet. You'll also only need 20GB of storage space.
System requirements can be a source of anxiety if you have an older computer. Will you have to upgrade that old GPU? Is that several-generations-behind CPU finally past its sell-by-date? If you plan to pick up Civilization 7 next February 11th, you don't need to worry. It looks as easygoing as any modern major release.
The minimum requirements for 1080p Low include an Intel Core i3-10100 or AMD Ryzen 3-1200, a GTX1050, RX 460 or Intel Arc A380, and 8 GB RAM. This will only give you 30 frames per second, but for a game such as Civ 7, that's more than enough.
You'll spend most of your time working out the best tile placement and pondering over menus.
For 1080p Medium settings at 60 fps you'll need a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, 16 GB RAM, and either an RTX 6600 or Arc A750. The fact that the developers are recommending processors four years old is pleasing, especially since Civilization has traditionally been a CPU-heavy game series.
What about 4K? I can't recall the last time I saw a system specification that listed the modest (but still very powerful) RTX-4070 as the 60 fps option for 4K High, but here we are. Or the RX7800XT. I personally use this card on a daily basis, even though it seems that no one else does. Still, this is a very reasonable graphic hardware for these settings.
The CPU requirements for 4K jump to the Core i7-14700F and Ryzen 9-5950X. If I were a bet man, I'd say, looking at the other specs, that anything decent from the last couple of CPU generations will do just fine. It could be for turn-time optimization, as the processor has to work hard in a Civ games working out the AI's turns.
The storage requirement is also a big news, and is a surprisingly low 20 GB. I have low-graphics games on my computer that take up more space than that. So well done to the developers for keeping things lean and mean.
It's actually three GB less than the standard version of Civilization 6, although some of my more cynical co-workers have pointed out that this could be because of a lot content being kept back as DLC. I would never suggest it. Never.
Civilization 7 will run on as many computers as possible when it is released in February. This means that many of us can start our new late-night addiction without any worries. I was sucked into Civ 5 and 6, and judging by what Tyler has seen in his hands-on demo, it looks like more of the same is coming my way.
