Clair Obscur's developers say they are a small indie team and that the game will not take up 100s of hours. They also reveal the price.
Clair Obscur Expedition 33 preorders went live on Amazon recently for $49.99. While it's unclear if this was an error, the developers just confirmed that this is the price when the game launches.
The game's X page says: "Prices you see at your local retailers are accurate and we can't get enough of you playing the game." "We're a small team, with an Indie-spirit. We're creating something that we believe is truly unique." We are not an AAA studio. This is our first game and we want to let as many people discover our world as possible.
Although this may seem expensive for an indie studio considering that other RPGs of the same size as Dragon Age: The Veilguard cost $59.99, most players don't seem bothered by the price. One player said, "I was more willing to pay full-price." "This is the kind of revitalization that the genre needs, particularly with a new developer jumping in. I've slowly been turning into an AA player as that's where the devs seem to make the type of game they want.
The only way to know if people can afford the price is to play the game and compare it with other RPGs of similar pricing. For now, the $49.99 price tag seems reasonable, especially when you consider what the developers have shown so far.
Many were more concerned with the length of the game than the price. Fortunately for me, I think the developers also got this number right. The developer continued, "To be clear: We poured our hearts and souls in this game." "Expedition 33 has 30+ hours of gameplay, plus as much content for completionist Expeditioners."
For players who don't get as much time as they once did, 30 hours seems to be the ideal amount of time for the main story. "I don't have the time to play the 50-60 hour PS2 games anymore, much less the 80-120 hours that are released these days," a player says. If you want more from an RPG then it sounds like at least 30 extra hours will be available in sidequests.
