Cryptic Studios, Star Trek Online's developer, is cutting jobs again for the second time this year.
Cryptic Games, the developer of Star Trek Online, has cut more staff a year after it laid off an unspecified amount of employees in a "comprehensive reorganization program" at Embracer Group.
According to Game Developer, many Cryptic employees have stated on LinkedIn that they are being laid off at the end October. Although the number of people who will be laid off is not known, it sounds like there are a lot of them.
Amelia March, a character artist at Cryptic Studios, wrote: "Unfortunately October will be my final month there." "I, along with many of my talented colleagues, have been affected by the recent layoffs."
Mike Fatum, senior community manager at Cryptic Studios, said in an independent post: "Like many others posting today I now know my official last date with Cryptic Studios." Gianna Rockwell, an environment artist, also used the word "many," in her post. She wrote, "Unfortunately, at the end of this month, I will be a part of the Cryptic layoffs along with many other amazingly talented colleagues."
Mauricio Tjerina, a senior artist at Cryptic Studios, wrote: "I will be departing Cryptic Studios by the end of this week." "I am part a layoff with other talented people that have become like my family over the last 10 years."
Cryptic laid off employees before in November 2023, following the Embracer collapse that followed a $2 billion deal between Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group and the Embracer. It was unusual that the news of those layoffs came to light first in October, but were confirmed only a month later. This could be happening again, as other Cryptic employees like producer Julia Frederickson and QA worker Randy Habenicht have posted about being laid off weeks ago.
It's unclear whether these are part of the same round of cuts or separate ones. But Fatum, senior community manager, hinted that some of these cuts had been planned for some time. In a message he posted in August, Fatum wrote: "I'm searching for a new job, with a deadline rapidly approaching."
I've contacted Embracer to get more information. I will update this post if I hear back.
