I don't remember February ever being one of the most popular months for games. But the industry's practice of delaying big games until the new year, after the holiday season, has made it a magnet for games that need "extra time to polish." And boy, is February 2025 packed.
The last-minute delay for Assassin's Creed Shadows has just added another major game to a month already overflowing. Here's what I mean:
- Deliverance 2 -- 11 February
- Civilization 7,--February 11
- Assassin's Creed Shadows - February 14
- Avowed -- February 18
- Monster Hunter Wilds - February 27
- Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii -- February 27
Delays have forced the release of Assassin's creed shadows, Avowed and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. They might have chosen early 2025 to avoid the 2024 games but, as is so often the case, it didn't work.
In one month, there are a lot of action RPGs - games that can take hundreds of hours to play. Civilization 7 bucks RPG trends, but is the series that's most notorious for consuming hours. It's a ShamWow, but instead of beer spilled it consumes your remaining time on Earth.
Even worse, all of these games could be excellent. Phil has played Avowed and says Obsidian should not shy away from Skyrim comparisons. I've played Civilization 7 and I know its changes will be controversial. However, I like the fact that Firaxis doesn't play it safe after 30 years. Fraser was positive about Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. He called it "larger, more confident and extremely tactile." Mollie stated that Monster Hunter Wilds was one of the PC Gamer's most anticipated titles and the star of Gamescom this year. As for the Yakuza, I'm sure that PC Gamer is down for a 'Yakuza adventure' but with pirates.
The recently delayed Assassin's Creed Shadows looks decent too: we haven't played it yet, but Morgan said that it had the best-looking Assassin's Creed gameplay in a while, and the same attention to sneaking around as in Assassin's Creed Mirage.
The games all have different vibes. For example, Kingdom Come is a medieval grognard game, while Avowed is more energetic. So, it shouldn't be difficult for anyone to choose which one they want to play. I wonder if Assassin's Creed Shadows will benefit from being compared to these other time-sinks. However, the delay will allow it to be released before Dragon Age: The Veilguard on October 31. It's not likely to be delayed until February unless it is. (Sorry Dragon Age Fans: knock on the wood, knock on the wood.
