Former Blizzard President has boldly declared that Sony's potential FromSoftware acquisition is 'probably the top 2 acquisition of videogames over the last 15+years, if not ever.'
Ybarra, as spotted by GamesRadar weighed in on this week's hot news: the report that Sony was sniffing out Kadokawa. This was later confirmed in a Kadokawa statement, which stated that the company had received "an early letter of intent to purchase the company's share." Ybarra made a bold claim on Twitter: "If Sony purchases FromSoftware, this would be the second largest acquisition in video games in the past 15 years, if not ever."
Ybarra calls FromSoftware "incredible" and says they create games that are "AAA-epic", whatever that means. Ybarra concludes, "The only bigger thing would be buying Valve and Nintendo." "I don't think either of these scenarios will happen." "Exciting times."
Listen, I do agree that Sony's acquisition of a juggernaut such as Kadokawa was a big deal. The conglomerate is involved in a variety of fields, including videogames, films, anime, and manga. Sony has been working to increase its ownership in these areas in recent years. But I wouldn't compare it to an acquisition of the level of Nintendo or Valve. Hey, I could be wrong and I'm underestimating Kadokawa.
It's interesting that Ybarra only focuses on the FromSoftware portion of the potential acquisition. Kadokawa is much more than that. I would bet that Sony is looking at more than just videogame developers. Sony already owns Crunchyroll which it merged in 2022 with its earlier acquisition, Funimation. Anime and Manga is one of the industries that doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. I wouldn't surprise if Kadokawa Publishing's giant publishing operation was the biggest prize. Say it with me, people: Consolidation in the industry is bad for all!
