Fortnite 2024 will be a battle royale game, an arena game, a racing and rhythm game, as well as a survival game. Later this year it will also be a first person shooter. Epic has opened testing for the "First Person camera mode" in Fortnite. It is now available in Fortnite creative and UEFN.
This official implementation of camera trickery goes beyond what regular Fortnite players already know. Creators often "fake", janky first person views, to good effect.
Epic's blog entry on the feature begins with "Workarounds begone". The new First Person Camera Mode allows you to create polished first person experiences rendered from the character's perspective!
Epic hopes Fortnite creators use the tool to create modes in "popular genres such as first-person shooter, team-based, or tactical shooter games or add new levels immersion into horror and cinematic adventures games."
Since the first-person module in Fortnite is still "experimental," it's not allowed for anyone to publish anything yet that uses it. After playing with it this past week, I can see that first-person Fortnite looks promising, but is still very early. Epic warns that most guns do not have first-person animations for reloading, so your arms will just disappear from the screen. The first-person animations are pretty good and the shooting isn't too bad either. You can sprint, leap, and aim down-sights as you would expect.
Fortnite first-person module - Experimental"
Epic's intentions are clear: "First-person Battle Royale," once it is ready, will be an official Fortnite Playlist, right next to the Zero Build and standard BR. If it is popular, it will stay.
I wonder if is popular enough to support first-person forever. Epic's blog post makes it clear that supporting first-person mode is a manual task. New animations are needed for new weapons and tools moving forward. I wonder if Epic wants to take on this task, just as it has done with the Fall Guys and Lego versions of Fortnite skins. I know that this new way to play Fortnite will need more TLC if it's going to catch on. Even with custom animations first-person Fortnite feels more like an FPS mod than a fully-fledged FPS. The character arms and gun skins don't look good up close (since they weren’t designed for this), the forced FOV feels claustrophobic and the scale of Fortnite’s environments is strange.
You can now try the first-person Fortnite Module in UEFN and private islands. When the module enters beta, players will be able publish levels in first person.
