GOG will keep games like New Vegas on modern systems all by itself. It will use its own developers to keep oldies running 'for generations to follow'
GOG will make it easier for me than ever to avoid playing anything released after the second George W. Bush Administration. The company announced today that it is launching a GOG Preservation program. This program promises to collect over 100 games, and keep them compatible until the end of times. The way things are going, it could be a couple of years.
GOG says, "We are excited to launch the GOG Preservation Program." "It is a new initiative where we commit our resources to maintain games' compatibility for modern and future systems. Over 100 improved classics...will receive an official stamp beginning November 13th at 3 PM CET." Below you will find a list of all the games. GOG states that the list will grow over time.
GOG, in other words is putting "a growing collection" of hand-picked titles through a series of tests to determine if they meet its own standards of quality. "Every game in this program will receive updates and care from GOG to preserve the spirit of gaming for players today and future generations." Plus, those who are brought up to date get a shiny "Good Old Game badge" in silver.
It's unclear what "up to snuff", for GOG, means. If you're expecting remasters-by-another-name--updates that add spiffy new resolution options or integrate fancy enhanced textures--it doesn't sound like you'll get them. GOG claims that it "aims" to preserve the original games and make them playable on modern machines. This means being very cautious with any modifications that could alter the original experience.
This means that all preservation work will be done by GOG, and only the functionality of the game will be affected. A game that looked fuzzy and was 4:3 in 1996 will look fuzzy and be 4:3 on your Windows 11 computer. This is the pledge. If you're looking for an example of what GOG will do, they point to the recent revivals of Alpha Protocol and Resident Evil OG.
To be honest, I think that sounds pretty good. Many fan-fixes can be problematic because they mess with things that aren't broken. If GOG can give me an easy way to access my favorite classics, as they were in the past? All I want is that.
