Hazelight teases a new game with EA after selling 20 million copies of It Takes Two

Hazelight Studios, the developer, announced that It Takes Two has sold more than 20 million copies. Our review called it "a brilliant coop adventure, with a wild variety." The milestone was reached roughly three and a half years after the release of the game, which is an astonishing number for a two-player original experience. This is a great vindication of studio leader Josef Fares' bold promise to give $1000 if anyone got bored.

It Takes Two is a game that has been selling well since its release. It has also maintained momentum far beyond the point when many games stop. This could be because it's a great shared experience and the kind of thing I can imagine people recommending (I have). It's obvious that the critical acclaim didn't hurt, either. The game was also honoured at The Game Awards and BAFTAS. And it has been heavily discounted across all platforms during this time.

It Takes Two has sold 16 million copies since March of this year. It's been around for four million copies in the last six-month period.

This kind of success has led to a forthcoming film adaptation from Amazon Studios with none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson producing. I'm going to take a risk and say that this film adaptation has no chance of winning any awards, even though Fares accepted an award at The Game Awards saying "F*ck The Oscars!" F*ck the Oscars. F*ck you!"

Fares, too, had something to say and teased Hazelight's upcoming game on social media.

Fares said, "Getting a lot questions about the next games." Here is a tease. It's a BRAND-NEW IP called S*** ******N. I can't wait until soon to show it.

It doesn't match up with his answers, but I like "Space Muffin". Hazelight's account quoted Fares shortly after, posting a picture of an untitled design document with a scribbled over release date. The game will be published again under the EA Originals brand. This led to a long-running branter between EA, Hazelight and myself.

EA PR sent a note stating "Hazelight Studios is teaming up with EA Originals on a brand new co-op experience and we can't to share more information with you soon!" It's not a surprise, since Hazelight Studios has focused on co-op games from the beginning and has never failed to deliver.
