Hideo Kojima wants to 'present a whole new dimension of cinematic adaption' for Death Stranding, because making games'similar to movies' isn't good enough.
A year ago, the acclaimed movie company A24 joined Death Stranding film project. A24 was one of the few studios that could match Hideo Kojima’s wild visions. It seems I was right, as Kojima does not want this film to be a typical videogame adaptation.
Kojima said in an interview with Variety that he aims to "present a new dimension" of cinematic adaptation, which goes beyond simply turning a videogame into a live action movie. I have no idea what Kojima's plan is and how he plans to do it.
The Death Stranding film may be hoped to be more than just a decent videogame movie, but that's not a very high bar. The Borderlands film is a shambles, and the trailers for the upcoming Minecraft film aren't much better. But there have been some great TV adaptations in the past year.
I can think of two shows that were absolutely fantastic: the second season Arcane, and the Netflix series Castlevania: Nocturne. These are not just videogame adaptations. They are fantastic series in their own right that don't rely solely on their gaming roots for points. I think Kojima's goal is to create a cinematic experience that is unique. However, I am not a genius who wants to reinvent the film industry.
Kojima admits that while creating a live action Death Stranding is not difficult, he also has a solid foundation in making games. "My work is often seen as similar to a film, but at its core, games are what i create." Although the idea that he only makes movies is a bit harsh, Death Stranding is a videogame anyone can play.
