Magic: The Gathering will release a Final Fantasy set that includes Emet-Selch and Kefka as well as the obvious choices.
When I imagined what cards would be included in Magic's crossover series with the Final Fantasy games, I thought we'd see Cloud and Tifa along with leads from more recent games like Clive and Noctis. I was surprised that they didn't go into FF14 in depth, despite the popularity of the game. However, two pieces of artwork revealed in a sneak peek at next year's collection are exactly that, while another represents a moment from the fan favorite, FF6. (It's basically the Morrowind of Final Fantasy.)
In a video where Square Enix product architect Zakeel Gorden and Square Enix producer Shoichi Ihikawa fanboyed at each other about their respective games we saw the artwork for six of the cards. They look much nicer than the cards in the official Final Fantasy CCG which used blurry game assets to represent characters.
One shows Kefka Palazzo as the flamboyant FF6 final boss poisoning Doma’s water supply. Kefka could return in another card. One might be used to drop poison tokens on an opponent, while the other would present him as a summonable legend. Emet-Selch is a villain from FF14 that's loved by those who have 1,000 hours to spend on it. A Postmoogle also appears from the same game. It's easy for people to forget that FF14 was a rare MMO success, and that it funded Square Enix's other less successful games.
Other artwork includes Lightning, from FF13 and a kiss shared by Tidus and Yuna in FF10. According to the official site, the picture will be used as a reprint for the Together Forever card that was introduced in 2018's Battlebond Set. The final image is a picture of Sephiroth, who you'd expect to see. However, given the action pose in which he's posed, I wouldn't surprise if it's a reprint. Maybe the classic Murder Card?
The Final Fantasy Magic Set will be released in paper and digital form on June 13, 2025. It will be the first Magic's Universes Beyond set to be legalized in standard format.
