Micron's first PCIe 5 SSD is 60 TB and can house 375 Stalker 2 installations or even better 35,294 Crab Champions installations.
We've always recommended that you make sure your drive is large enough to accommodate the ever-increasing size of game installations. Stalker 2's install size, for example, was just increased to 160 GB as part of the latest system requirements. Oof.
Micron has released the Micron ION 6505, despite the fact that 60 TB is a lot. We usually recommend a SSD of 2 TB or 1 TB if your budget is tight. This badboi has been described as "the fastest 60TB datacenter SSD in the world and the industry's very first E3.S 60TB SSD".
I'm being a bit facetious when I say "too much", since this is a SSD that is clearly intended for datacentres and not your humble gaming system. There were other SSDs that were faster than this one, but they were all in datacentres.
The ION 6650 is able to transfer data at a rate of 12 GB/s using only 20 W. Unfortunately, it only has a speed of 5,000MB/s. However, I guess datacentre storage doesn't often need to write as much.
Datacenter experts will also be pleased with its efficiency since it is "the first 60TB SSD in the world with OCP 2.5, introducing active state power management" (ASPM). This new feature allows for the drive to idle with 4 watts when in the L1 mode, compared to 5 watts when in the L0 mode. This can improve energy efficiency by up to 20%.
I'm curious to see what this device could do in my gaming PC. It's worth noting that it can hold a ton of games. Doing some quick calculations, I see that the ION 6650 can host 375 Stalker2 installations. Nice.
Crab Champions, my favorite crustacean-based game, takes up 1.73 GB of space. This means that it could hold 35,294 copies of this wonderful indie title. It's even better.
It's almost tempting to give it a try, given that it's "available as E3.S, U.2, or E1.L form-factors" and you can get a U.2 M.2 adapter quite cheaply. Unfortunately, PCIe adapters with 5.0 speeds are hard to find, so you would have to reduce the speed of your drive to 4.0 when you install it. A man can still dream.
