Microsoft has recalled Windows 11's Recall AI PC yet again, and it won't be available for testing until December.
Microsoft decided to delay the controversial Recall feature on Copilot AI PCs, which screenshots all your actions, back in June. Microsoft has now delayed Recall yet again, asking for more time to "refine".
After Recall's delay in June, it was planned to release the software for testing by Windows Insiders within a few short weeks. This plan was then pushed back to October. Even that modest goal has been abandoned and it appears Microsoft is not confident enough to release Recall as a beta for testing.
"We are committed in delivering a safe and trusted experience with Recall. We're taking extra time to refine this experience before previewing with Windows Insiders, Brandon LeBlanc said.
Recall is a tool that will help you remember what you did on your computer. It uses AI algorithms, running locally on your PC, to create a timeline which you can search and scroll through.
Security researchers found that the Recall database, which stores all of those screenshots, was not encrypted. This opened up a huge security gap. If Recall records nearly everything you do on your computer, this could include private correspondence, banking information, and the like.
Microsoft has made Recall a feature that is available to users on a voluntary basis, rather than as if it were installed by default. Users of Copilot PCs can also uninstall the software completely.
Recall's database is now encrypted, which is a welcome change, even if it is hard to believe this wasn't always the case. Access to Recall can only be gained through Windows Hello authentication.
Microsoft's ability to meet even the modest testing deadline of December remains to be seen. Recall is not yet an official feature of Windows 11 Copilot, and it's unclear when that will be. It's great that Microsoft is now taking a cautious stance.
The whole saga only reinforces the impression that the AI industry is a bunch of naivete, throwing everything at the wall and hoping for something to stick. They don't care about the consequences.
