Notch is impressed with the Minecraft movie. 'I expected way worse'

The first trailer of the upcoming Minecraft movie, A Minecraft Movie, was released last week. It gave us our first look at Jason Momoa chewing scenery in a wig. The reactions to the film have been mixed. It is a truly bizarre creation. You can't tell if it will be a light entertainment masterpiece or a Borderlands scale disaster.

Markus "Notch", the creator of Minecraft, is one man who watches from the sidelines in amusement and with interest. Notch released Minecraft in 2009. He oversaw the early years of its development, before selling Mojang Studios and the game to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014.

Notch, the trailer's protagonist, says "Ok I am in." "Wow, this is a strange feeling." The programmer said it was "pretty surreal," to see his old project become a Hollywood film, and thought it was "very cool that they got Jack Black."

As for the trailer: "For a film about a video game with literally no plot, it looks surprising fun," says Notch. "I laughed... "I laughed... "Yes, the sheep got to me." One user says that it looks like a commercial for the game featuring Jack Black and Jason Momoa. Notch replies, "Well duh."

Notch says, "I'm for the spectacle." When asked about his feelings regarding Minecraft becoming a film. "I would have probably agreed to Uwe making it. I don't feel the same way about the game as players, but for me it's about seeing new and weird takes on ideas (like the creeper!) that were sometimes just spontaneous things.

Some people have not liked the furry style of the creeper in the movie. Notch says that he is "sort of used to it due to the plushies. So it works." In my original headcanon they had a more leaf-like texture. You know, rustling. "But like I said, plushies rewired my mind, so furry is fine."

Notch says that the trailer has not been received well by all Minecraft fans. Kieran, a Minecraft fan, tells Notch, "it looks awful and nothing like the games you created." Notch says, "that's why I like it." "I get that it's different for people who made the game rather than played it."

There are some complaints about the way Jack Black and the trailer represent Steve. Notch says, "That makes it funnier for me, but I have a completely different perspective than people who have actually played Minecraft and not just worked on it." Notch says that it's strangely funny when someone asks whether Jack Black was the inspiration for Steve. "No, Steve was mostly inspired by Quake 1 skins," he replies. "No idea why."

The internet being what it is, someone will soon come in and decry these characters as "serious woke shite." Notch says that he doesn't really care what direction the new characters take: "Save it for when they push it on existing lore." Who cares about the makeup in a new story? He also says "I hope for a lot more Jack Black overacting." The plot can be anything, since I've never had that personal experience playing the game."

Joey asks what all Minecrafters are waiting to hear: "Okay but do you think that Herobrine will show up in the MCU post credits scene?

Notch says "Haha" and "Oh wow." Someone else speculates that the ultimate Easter Egg would be a Notch appearance as Herobrine. Alas, "no guest appearance," states the man himself.

Notch says that he is not involved in the film at all, other than it being based off of work he did ten year ago. "To me personally, it's kind of fun in a trippy nostalgia sort of way. Also, I was expecting a lot worse."

Words of wisdom. Notch is working on a new game called Levers and Chests. It doesn't yet have a release date. Notch says, "I'll do my best to release something that's fun to play (or at least interesting)." The Minecraft movie will be released on 4 April 2025.
