Purchased a pre-built Intel 13th/14th Gen Gaming PC? Here are the different warranty extensions that PC builders claim to be offering
Some motherboards have already started receiving the promised microcode fix to address Intel 13th and 14th Gen processor stability issues. Intel's extended warranty should cover many who have an affected chip.
What about those who bought a PC that already had the chip in it and didn't purchase the chip separately? Will they also get an extended warranty?
The Verge asked this question to more than a dozen PC manufacturers. The responses ranged from offering a warranty extension that was equal to Intel's two-year warranty to not offering any warranty extension. Overall, the response was positive. Unfortunately, there wasn't a "yes" that was unanimous.
Here's an overview of what different system builders offer:
- Asus 2 year warranty extension
- HP : Two-year warranty Extension
- iBuyPower : Five-year total processor warranty
- Maingear: Five-year total CPU warranty
- Falcon Northwest : Five-year total CPU Warranty
- Digital Storm : 5-year CPU warranty
- Corsair : Four-year warranty on the CPU
- Origin PC : Four-year CPU warranty
- Puget Systems : Three-year CPU warranty
- NZXT : No warranty extension promise
- Dell and Alienware : No warranty extension promise
- Acer : No warranty extension promise
- Lenovo : No response (yet).
- MSI : No response (yet).
- CyberPowerPC : No human response (yet).
It's important to note that companies who respond with "no promises" don't leave their affected customers behind. Dell and Alienware state that "Processors diagnosed as having this issue will be replace", whereas NZXT states they are still working with Intel to determine the best way to serve affected customers and encourages them to contact customer service.
Acer says it is still conducting its investigation and will then "determine if any changes will need to be done to our warranty offering."
It is important to note that the responses citing totalCPU warranties are actually extending their warranties, and not simply reiterating their standard one. Check out The Verge report for all of the quotes.
Intel 13th and 2014th Gen CPUs that have a processor power of 65 W or more are vulnerable to the issue with elevated voltage if they've not been patched. This includes Core i5-13600KF CPUs up to the Core i9-14900KS.
These warranty extensions apply to chips that are already affected by instability issues. If you have a chip that is vulnerable but has not yet been affected, update to the latest BIOS 0x129 as soon as it's released for your motherboard.
