Randy Pitchford assures fans that even after the Borderlands film and the disastrous Risk of Rain 2 expansion, he will continue to'make stuff'.

Randy Pitchford, Gearbox's boss, has continued an odd but entertaining thread in which he replies to anyone online who does not like what he says with long and confusing responses.

Pitchford defended himself this time, after someone brought up the recent failures of the Borderlands movie which crashed and burnt at the box office and the Risk of Rain 2 extension which ended up as a bit of train wreck. He compared Gearbox with--and let me be clear, I'm being serious--The Beatles.

Pitchford replied to a tweet with "I'm going keep making stuff." "I wish that everything could be a success, but it's not the way things work." The Beatles, the greatest musical act in history, had a 25 percent hit rate. I'm certain that every song they recorded was made with love, commitment to the arts and belief in their work. "My favourite performers, artists, and entertainers all made things that I didn't really like."

During their time together, the Beatles released 213 songs (188 Originals and 25 Covers), 22 of which were Singles. The band has had 18 number-one UK singles, second only behind Elvis Presley. They also have 20 number-one Billboard Hot 100 hits, the most by any artist. There were 14 albums released by the band, 11 of which reached number one in the US.

The Beatles' legacy cannot be compared to Gearbox games, and certainly not the Borderlands film. It's been awhile since I've played a Gearbox game that I enjoyed. Borderlands 3 was fun, with entertaining character and decent action. But it didn't make my top 10 list. I feel that Gearbox has more of a Nickelback vibe. You have some decent hits (I dare you to tell me that How You Remind Me, isn't an absolute banger), but are you a "good band"? Eh, debatable. If I had to compare The Beatles with any games studio then it would be Rockstar.

You won't be surprised to learn that I'm far from the only person who finds Pitchford's comparison out of tune. "Hi, Randy," a player responds. "When The Beatles released their new songs, they did not retroactively make the older songs significantly worse or literally impossible to listen. They didn't do it to other people's songs either. Hope this helps :)."

"It's cool," Pitchford continues, undeterred. "When artists miss, they need their fans to encourage them to keep creating. I don't think I'll ever make something you like again, but wouldn’t it be better if you had the chance to decide rather than artists never creating again after a market miss?

While I agree it's important to support creatives in their work, it's equally important to offer constructive criticism when it's necessary. Seekers of the Storm is the Risk of Rain 2 expansion. It has some obvious issues. These include disproportionate pricing, technical errors and tying Risk of Rain 2’s physics system with its framerate.
