Swen Vincke, Larian's boss, hints that the studio's next title will be released in 2029. He then yoinks it away saying: 'It's just a joke.'
Larian Studios is working on two games, which we are all eager to play. The games are still a while off, but... not that far?
IGN reported that Larian boss Swen vincke, during his acceptance speech for a Special Recognition Award at the SEA Game Awards, very subtly teased a 2029 release date for the game. In 2019, Larian opened a studio near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia's capital. Vincke said, "We have to work hard so that we can be here in five years."
Five years? Google tells me Larian's unannounced but acknowledged next game will be released in 2029. It's a long time, but at least it leaves the possibility open that we could play it before The Elder Scrolls 6 Right?
You can't count on that. Larian told IGN that he knew they would pick up on it. "It was a joke. I don't think so, we'll release the game when it's finished. It takes time to make big games, so don't expect us to give you a date.
Was he joking? Or was it a slip of tongue, an unintentional peek behind the curtain to Larian's super secret plan? Or, a third possibility, did Larian just pick a number because he was in need of one and "five" sounded like a reasonable choice? I'd bet on that.
This is not to say that Larian's new game will not be released in 2029. Just don't count it. Vincke is not joking when he says Larian makes large games. Vincke confirmed this in a recent interview. If you've ever played a Larian game, you already know. In August, he said that the machine was designed to create large games. "We were designed to make large, ambitious RPGs as well as to try out new stuff.
"We know what we want, how to improve them, and how to do something new... they're all huge."
Remember that it took Baldur's gate four years to reach 1.0. According to a similar timeline for Larian's upcoming big game, the reveal would have to happen next year. Possible? Sure. But is it likely? I'm less confident.
