The best part of Deadlock’s Halloween update is the new building redesign, which reimagines New York City as a truly occult city.
Deadlock celebrated Halloween this year with a small update that added some fun items and reworked a building into something beautiful. Deadlock's first seasonal event since its release in closed beta is a small patch that added a few fun items and reworked one building into something beautiful.
Deadlock's Halloween decorations are hard to miss. The jack-o'-lanterns may be small, but they are scattered all over the map. They are noticeable, especially since many of them replaced urns or golden jars that players love to destroy. The pumpkins may look creepy, but they are not the best part of the Halloween patch.
One of my favorite new additions are the new Halloween masks. So far, I have seen a Frankenstein's Monster, a jack o'lantern, a vampire, and a clown. It seems that heroes are given random masks in every game. But Vindicta is almost always given the clown mask.
The majority of players seem to think Vindicta is a clown because she's so funny. One player said that she was a character who tried too hard, like Widowmaker in Overwatch. "She is bad at taking objectives because she doesn't deal much damage to them." She can instantly kill you if you are at half [health]. Many people are bad with her AND her winrate is low. It's like playing dice with a member of your team." All of this was coming from Vindicta's self-proclaimed one-trick. I admit, I can see the clown comparison after reading that.
The Baroness Hotel has been redesigned. It is the most exciting addition to this patch. This building is located next to Greenwich Street, or Green Lane, and has been fading into the background for a while. It's now a really standout building, particularly for players who are playing Deadlock for the very first time.
The hotel's exterior is now covered in ivy, which has been climbing up the stone walls. It also has a new roof, complete a spires, which will raise the height of this building, making it more difficult to navigate. The interior of this building has seen some of the most dramatic changes. The rooms were once dark, grey and lifeless. Now, they have new tiled floors, windows, lanterns and furniture.
These small changes in structural designs may not seem like much, but they are really exciting. When Deadlock was officially announced, Valve showed us some concept art for what the map would eventually look like. Cool doesn't begin to describe it.
Deadlock takes place in an occult New York. However, apart from the typography and hero design, it's hard to tell from the map. This map concept art shows the potential of a truly witchy and stunning map. I hope Valve can realise it one day, even though it may be one building at a a time.
