The boxing game, which only exists because big publishers refuse to touch the sport, has now sold more than a million copies
Undisputed exists because there was no other big boxing game for a long time. Ash Habib is a boxing enthusiast from Sheffield, UK. He wondered why games such as the Fight Night series were gone (the last one was in 2010), and that big publishers had decided that the genre was doomed.
Habib, his brothers Asif and Asad and their thoughts led them to found Steel City Interactive. The company has enjoyed significant venture capital investment and now boasts 70 employees. Undisputed was released in early access 2023. PCG's Tyler Wilde describes the game as "an aggressively complicated boxing sim" with a focus of authenticity and a large cast of licensed real world fighters.
Undisputed was released from early access on Steam on October 8. Steel City Interactive announced today that the game had sold over one million copies. Game Developer reports that this was achieved within a week. I'm curious to know how many of these may have been early access purchases. I've asked Steel City Interactive to clarify and will update if they respond.
A million copies of an indie boxing video game is a great achievement and shows that the sport still has a lot of interest.
Habib said, "We're absolutely blown away by Undisputed's reception." "Our ambition is to create a new benchmark for combat sport games. Surpassing this landmark shows us that we are on the right track to achieving our goal."
But it's still not all good news. Undisputed's launch has caused a lot of concern among players, especially in regards to the online elements. This has been further exacerbated when the studio announced that an update would be released in December to address these issues.
The punters aren't impressed after so many years in early access and considering how important the online experience is for a competitive fighting games. Steam reviews are mixed, and they highlight how Undisputed has fallen prey to some old traps.
Fish explains, "People disconnect deliberately to avoid a lose and prevent your victory." "Seriously like half of the fights. If you want to play online, wait until they fix that crap.
It does seem that this is a fundamental issue, one that should have already been anticipated and taken into account.
Mounjaro merchant says, "I've been playing on and off ever since early access. I can't recommend it to anyone. Even the most avid boxing fans." "It's awful, the punch connection is terrible, and almost every match I play has horrible lag, despite excellent internet."
Undisputed has a big advantage: it's the only licensed boxing game available, unless you want your old Xbox 360 to play Fight Night Champion. I've asked Steel City Interactive to provide an update on the current issues and the promised fixes.
