The Rocky Horror Show gets its own videogame this Halloween. It's a retro 2D Platformer, for some reason.
I confess: I don't understand The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I can appreciate Tim Curry's sexual confusion in his prime just as much as anyone else, but the musical feels like a lot of running about for one decent song.
Maybe I'll be able finally to grasp it now that the story is being translated into videogame form. That's the only medium I understand. It's true, we are getting a Rocky Horror videogame--and soon, as the trailer promises an October 2024 release. Just in time for Halloween.
FreakZone games is behind it. You might recognize them from their AVGN series or Manos: The Hand of Fate game (which makes licensing Rocky Horror look very mainstream in comparison). This game looks to fit their retro 2D platformer vibe, which includes pixelart, chiptunes and lots of retro graphics. The footage shows a lot of steps to right, but oddly not many jumps to left.
I'm not sure if 2D platforms are the best way to adapt a story like this, but I'm also not sure if Rocky Horror is a "story". It's probably more in keeping for this game to focus on vibes rather than cinematic accuracy. The 8-bit soundtrack is also a charming representation of the cast.
The game doesn't yet have a Steam page, but the trailer promises that it will be released there, along with versions for PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. So keep an eye out. Insert your own clever Rocky Horror joke to close out this post. I've already exhausted my knowledge of the "jump to left" gag.
