Windows 11 is the most popular OS among Steam users in the world, but it took longer than Windows 10 to reach this position.

According to the latest Steam Hardware Survey, Windows 11 was originally launched in the second half of 2021. It took just under three years for it to become the most popular OS among Steam users worldwide.

Windows 10 users accounted for 47.09% of the polled computers in August. If you are curious about the other Microsoft OS clan, Windows 7 is at 0.037% while Windows 8.1 is only 0.07%. According to the latest Steam Hardware survey, as more gaming PCs come with Windows 11 installed, the percentage of OSes that are not Windows 11 decreases.

Windows 10 had a 92% market share in May 2021. Windows 10 overtook Windows 7 at only 34%, which is partly due to the slow decline of Windows 7 and the lack of popularity for Windows 8.1. Windows 7 and 8.1 are only a fraction of the Steam player base, which suggests Steam gamers had more options in choosing Windows OS in 2016. Windows 10 has managed to become the most-popular OS on Steam within a year.

When looking at Steam Hardware Surveys, it's important to remember that they are anonymous and optional. This means that while they provide a good estimate of how many players use certain machines, the figures are only estimates extrapolated to the wider population.

According to the survey, Windows 11 is the most common OS. This is in line with previous surveys, which showed a slow growth for Windows 11, but this could change from month to month.
