The extraterrestrial arachnid follows the tradition of easy to pick up, but difficult to master games like Angry Birds or The Splatters. With more accurate controls it would even be able to give them a serious run for their money.

This is not a game for everyone because of its difficulty, but if you bother to understand its gameplay, it will end up rewarding the player.

Tight controls are a must for such a platformer and from my perspective the controls in Alien Spidy are not as tight as they should be. Sure there are some addictive elements and I did enjoy the games vibrant visuals; however, I just expected a much more refined experience.

A fun 2D platformer experience at first... but short after the game starts to show up its many flaws.

Alien Spidy is a great premise for a game but the extreme difficulty, inaccurate controls, and ridiculous level advancement requirements really hinder what could have been a great game.

If you like challenging platformers with some minor puzzle elements thrown in, you’ll probably love Alien Spidy. The control issues make it hard to recommend at full price, but it’s an easy recommendation to try out when it goes on sale at some point in the future.

On a whole. Alien Spidy is a platformer whose fun gameplay is slightly overshadowed by its overly stringent level progression mechanic and iffy controls.

With a punishing gatekeeping system and slippery controls, the difficulty often feels artificial and unfair, ruining what could have been a much more charming game.

The difficulty, along with an unimpressive combination of uninspired aesthetics, unnecessarily long load times, and a generic feel, make the game, as its title suggests, a disappointingly alien experience.

If it wasn’t so difficult to get high scores in levels, Alien Spidy would be a fun and challenging game, but the combination of a difficult point system, inaccurate controls and constant loading screens between restarts bring this game down to a frustrating chore.

It's certainly not worth losing weeks to.

Alien Spidy is an unnecessarily complicated game, with inaccurate controls and an unattractive story and art design, and even though it has certain production value it's far from offering an enjoyable experience.

Decent idea, but far too fussy to be fun.

The retro feel is there, but the controls ruin what could have been a great platformer.

Alien Spidy tries to present the player with a platformer that's both fun and challenging. There is absolutely no balance to be found between those two elements, however. The result is an unforgiving title that hardly ever becomes even slightly addictive.

Alien Spidy is so close to being an enjoyable, active puzzle experience, but it lacks the fluidity, both in gameplay and in progression, that would allow it to be a truly memorable and engaging experience.

Alien Spidy's cool momentum-based platforming is both unique and uniquely infuriating.

Official Xbox Magazine May 19, 2013
For a rather simplistic platformer, Alien Spidy’s ultimately just too challenging, in all the wrong ways. Even after many play sessions, we didn’t feel like we were learning what we needed to eventually master it, and that’s a big turnoff.

Alien Spidy's environmental aesthetic, cute characters, and charming music are alluring, but beneath those features is an unbalanced platforming adventure that can drive you mad. The controls are unreliable, and the difficulty spikes are incredibly harsh--especially when mixed the the game's environments, which can often become muddled as you try to discern interactive object with pretty set piece.
