It is something Ubisoft needs to learn about its games on a very fundamental level: when the company isn't sanitising its narratives and characters to target a Call of Duty-sized blockbuster, it makes better games.

All in all, I really enjoyed Assassin’s Creed Rogue, and think it’s well-worth checking out despite being the old-hardware release for the series this year. It’s a far better experience than Unity overall, provided you enjoyed Black Flag like I did.

A great installment in the series. While it doesn't overhaul gameplay mechanics all that much, it delivers a fun experience that turns the table on the assassins and shows the conflict from a new angle. Shay is a great character and his assassin hunts are some of the most thrilling sequences in the series so far.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue isn’t a game changer for the franchise. But it gives you a fun gaming experience and a satisfying story. Rogue is a bridge between ACIV, ACIII and Unity. You have to play ACR for the complete story experience. ACR is a very successful game with old gen graphics.

Combining fantastic story telling, intriguing characters and tons to do, Rogue takes Assassin's Creed to the pinnacle of old generation capabilities. Niggling issues are still present, but the story and characters make the experience seriously worthwhile.

Rogue proves why it’s time for the franchise to chart some new territory, but leaves no doubt about why we fell in love in the first place.

So far I have to say that Assassin’s Creed: Rogue is a lot of fun. It’s not really hugely new or innovative. Frankly it feels like Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag all over again. However, Black Flag was an OK game so that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Of course, if you're an Assassin's Creed fan, Rogue is a no-brainer and if you don't own a PS4 or Xbox One, we'd recommend this. But if you're expecting some innovation after Black Flag, you should probably give AC: Unity a spin instead of Rogue.

The frame-rate isn't great and apparently the camera wants to kill you, but otherwise this is a great send-off for the Assassin's Creed franchise on the last-gen consoles. The environments are varied and your role as a templar is interesting. Definitely recommended.

Rogue will not be remembered as the most innovative game of the franchise, but at least it offers new content enough to satisfy fans, maintaining all that made Black Flag a good game in the past generation. Made for true franchise fans, it's a game that doesn't shine for it's innovation, but it won't disappoint either.

Rogue doesn’t bring much new to the table, but there’s more to enjoy than simple fan service.

We are glad Ubisoft took the risk of making an Assassin's Creed in which you play the villain instead of the hero. The game might run on old techniques and mechanics, it feels surprisingly new.

Despite the fact that series has (arguably) successfully made the leap to new-gen systems, there’s still a lot to like with Assassins Creed Rogue as you gallivant about the globe. You’ve played it all before, but finding out if the grass really is greener on the other side helps breathe new life into the Creed.

Rogue doesn´t bring anything new, but builds on the addictive model of Black Flag together with an entertaining story. Any fan of the assassin series and/or the boats should not hesitate.

I wish playing as a templar would have had a more direct difference on the gameplay, now Assassin's Creed Rogue just feels a bit rushed. The numerous bugs and a boring main character don't do the game any favors either.

Assassin's Creed Rogue is a game created for those who don't seek or need a change in the franchise. It is more of the same, albeit offering the best parts of the "American Trilogy".

The last old-gen episode of the saga lets us interpret a Templar pirate, but the plot and the game mechanics take advantage of the new point of view only partially. The same good old(gen) AC.

Assassin's Creed Rogue will be a good value for those who didn't try Black Flag; for the others, it will be a serious case of déjà-vu, as the game doesn't bring anything really new in its gameplay mechanics.

Assassin's Creed Rogue is a solid, if slightly uninspired entry in a long-running franchise that will appeal mostly to hardcore fans.

Plays like a greatest hits album for the series so far.
