Look past the rough exterior, however, and you'll find a fun game with retro appeal.

Don’t have astronomical expectations for this movie-based action title.

More than anything, Astro Boy is a great surprise for what many would assume is simply some child’s Christmas present. The Astro Boy coating is there so kids ask mommy and daddy to spend their holiday bonuses on it, but High Voltage Software felt nice enough to sneak in a fun game too. It’s like the whiskey Grandpa adds to the eggnog.

Sadly Astro Boy boils down to a decent game that simply doesn't manage to be a whole heck of a lot of fun. The flying levels are truly inspired and serve to be the highlight of the game, but when they make up so little of it, it is hard to recommend the overall package.

The game has its pluses, and for old and new Astro Boy fans, you could do a lot worse. And for those who just want to experience the unbridled power of shooting hundreds of bullets out the ol' poop shoot, you should know that it's not as fun as it sounds.

Astro Boy just straight up isn't much fun. There is fun to be had, namely in the flying levels, but those are small portions of the game. The majority is a functional, but boring platformer/brawler.

The story mode clocks in at roughly three hours in length, and the Arena mode does little to add value to the package.

Astro Boy: The Video Game is a game that never should have been released. It’s evidently been made to quickly cash in on the movie tie-in. Boring gameplay, bad controls and a confusing storyline are just some of the lousy aspects. Flying missions are head and shoulders above the rest, but are quality-wise nowhere to be compared with other two dimensional shooters. Astro Boy is astronomically bad and needs to be avoided at all cost.

Astro Boy: The Video Game is not a bad game. It's also not a good game.

The high-flying Astro Boy stays firmly planted on the ground in this unimaginative adaptation of the film.

Playing Astro Boy: The Videogame feels like being thrown back to the 8-bit era, when almost every tie-in was a crappy game. And Astro Boy is indeed a crappy game.

Poor combat, generic enemies, and uninteresting levels make for a game that isn't worthy of the Astro Boy license.

Astro Boy: The Video Game is definitely a disappointing product that proves to be in perfect harmony with many of the worst tie-ins released in the recent years. Its several faults, along with a repetitive gameplay, will in fact be impossible to ignore for both newcomers and fans of the brand.

Astro Boy is a game to avoid.

Astro Boy is a movie-license miss with awful graphics, bad combat, and middling controls. Even if you loved the heralded Game Boy Advance Astro Boy game, this game still isn't worth your time because it takes those concepts and perverts them into something not fun at all.

Omega Factor is a classic 2D game that everyone should play. This is a shameful, artless knock-off.

We don't like it, but can't be bothered to hate it.
